Express Courier, Inc. Manager Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Memphis, TN - The day started out as usual for Sherrie Jones, Branch Manager of Express Courier in Memphis. She approved a bid to be presented to a prospective customer and reviewed driver performance evaluations. But around 10:00 am, she received an urgent call from the company President, Joe Bankemper, to join a conference call. Scott Keen, Lee Temple, and others who assist Sherrie in running the branch, silently followed Sherrie as she headed to the conference room to take the call.

Joe Bankemper, the company President, was joined by the entire executive team on his end of the line in Nashville. While she was on speakerphone, Scott Keen placed a letter on the table. The letter was not from a current or prospective customer. It was not really even a letter. It was a poem written for Sherrie by the owners expressing their appreciation and respect for her work as Branch Manager and in the other positions she had previously held for the past 15 years. It was Sherrie Jones’ 15 year anniversary with Express Courier.

During her tenure at Express, Sherrie has worked in every position in the company until her promotion to the Memphis Branch Manager in 1995. After the two owners, no employee has been with the company as long or knows the company as well as Sherrie does. But not only does she know everything about Express Courier’s business, Sherrie helped grow the company from a small operation to becoming the only statewide full-service courier provider in Tennessee.

When Sherrie was hired in 1987, there was only one branch, today’s Memphis branch, and only 12 employees and drivers. When Sherrie became Branch Manager in 1995, the company encompassed several hubs in Tennessee and the headquarters of the company had just moved to Nashville. Today’s Memphis branch, under Sherrie’s management, is one of the company’s largest and most successful hubs and offers a complete line of courier and warehousing services.

Sherrie believes in an open-door management policy and has formed an effective team culture in the Memphis branch. “The people filling the widely varying positions of the company all have the same goals,” Sherrie says. “We are all here to take care of the customer from our respective positions to make Express Courier their first choice. We are all here to make our company a success. We are all here to make this company a great place for us to work. Everyone contributes different skills to make an incredible team.”

To thank Sherrie for her successful management of the Memphis office, the owners and the executive team in Nashville presented Sherrie with diamond earrings. Scott Keen and Lee Temple placed the earrings in front of her as David Temple finished reading the poem to her over the phone. “Sherrie just laid her head down on the table, “Lee Temple later said. “She was really overcome by all of it.” “For the first time Sherrie is without words,” Scott” Scott Keen added.
